IPV Foremen – Vehicle Safety Checks

Following the recent IPV Safety Alert, all IPV Foremen are reminded of their responsibility to carry out a thorough walk-around and safety check before the vehicle is moved or used operationally. Particular attention must be given to the fall arrest/restraint bars around the cone well.

These must be present, correctly fitted, secure and positioned correctly before the vehicle moves.

This check must be specifically recorded in the vehicle defect book under Point 41 – Other, with “Fall Arrest Bars” written in the description to confirm that they have been checked.

The Emergency Stop Alarm button(s) must also be tested as part of the pre-use checks to confirm that they operate correctly and alert the driver as intended. Foremen must not treat the daily walk-around as simply a paperwork exercise — checks must be carried out thoroughly and any defect or significant safety concern must be recorded in the defect book.

Involve your crew members in the testing of the alarm system and ensure that they are aware of the locations as these may differ between each vehicle.

Any significant safety issue must also be communicated directly to management as soon as it is identified. If a safety-critical item such as the fall arrest bars or Emergency Stop Alarm is missing, damaged, incorrectly fitted or not functioning correctly, the vehicle must not be used for the affected operation until the issue has been addressed.

All IPV Foremen should also ensure they have read and understood the full IPV Safety Alert Toolbox Talk, available here:
